RCS is a set of standards developed by the GSMA (the Global System for Mobile Communications, which represents mobile carriers worldwide and establishes the standards they use) for enhanced mobile messaging. With it, you can send messages and media (such as photos and videos) at a higher quality between devices with benefits like reactions and typing indicators. It even operates with any data connection, including Wi-Fi. It brings all the benefits of not-so-modern instant messaging to replace the aging SMS standard.
Google to create RCS client for Android, enhanced SMS for all carriers
This does mean that the US carriers will likely provide at least an Android app to be pre-loaded on devices from the carriers. Does that mean that existing RCS Messaging apps such as Android Messages or Samsung Messages will become obsolete? Not likely. All RCS messaging clients on Android should work, regardless of the backend RCS solution the carrier is using.
Meanwhile, using RCS with the Google Messages app has the support of all of the major carriers in the U.S., removing any potential friction. Samsung even went so far as to ship a customized version of the Google Messages app, making it look more like what you'll find with the company's own messaging client.
With this solution, customers benefit from our near real-time RCS routing data, flexible deployment options, lightning-fast provisioning and fully redundant managed service to improve efficiency and create an enhanced mobile user experience.
Apple probably didn't create iMessage as a way to lock people into iOS at the start, but the platform has certainly grown that way. It's effectively a social network, one that Apple can upgrade without waiting on industry associations and carriers.
Right, it's a joke, but AOSP does have a messaging app that I believe is distinct from Google Messages. They could simply go back to that. I'm not suggesting carriers stop shipping an SMS client (though, at some point ten, twenty years from now, that, too, might just happen). 2ff7e9595c
